Well kids, tomorrow is Halloween! Hopefully you’re ready with some great, classic horror to read, your favorite Halloween festivities planned, some solid costume ideas, and a game plan if you plan to avoid Halloween parties this year. I’ll be having a tabletop party with a few buddies this year, and I cannot WAIT. Still, though the big planning is over for the Halloween season, we’ve still got a bit of spoopy to fit into our lives. In this week’s Fandom 5, we’re all talking about our favorite Halloween episodes of TV. Here are my five faves:
Full Bars, Bob’s Burgers
Like most of Bob’s Burgers, this episode is delightfully weird. The kids have an epic adventure trick-or-treating in a rich part of town, and the parents have to deal with an awkward, orange and black Halloween party at Teddy’s. The kids’ costumes are hilarious (Tina’s moma mummy is my favorite, because she’s my girl), watching Bob deal with potentially killing Teddy’s hamster is hilarious, as is the fact that Teddy painted literally everything he owns (including the hamster) orange and black is hysterical. It’s not a scary episode by any means, but it’s still one of my favorites.
Haunted Train, Hey Arnold!
This one was most definitely a scary episode. I haven’t watched this one since entering adulthood, but I remember it freaked me out when I was younger. Hey Arnold! always had the best ghost story episodes, but this one was by far my favorite. This episode is great because the entire adventure stems from a story Arnold’s Grandpa tells Arnold and Gerald when they were bored. Arnold tells the boys about a haunted train he encountered while working for the railroad, and promises the boys that the ghost should be returning that very night. It was always one of my favorite episodes of the show, and always was delightfully creepy. Plus, Brainy and his super loud breathing show up (about 7:20 in the video ), as always, at the worst possible moment, freaking everyone out initially, which was always one of my favorite repeat gags on the show.
Graveyard Shift, Spongebob Squarepants
The Slash-Bringing Hasher? The Slash-Ringing, the Trash-Singing, the Mash-Flinging, the Flash-Springing, the Crash-Dinging….
Community‘s random episodes like this that broke out of the traditional sitcom mold were always some of my favorites. A random zombie-like outbreak in the middle of a community college’s Halloween dance? Oh yes please. Really, Community always had excellent Halloween episodes, but this one was most certainly my favorite.
This might not be a Halloween episode, but it’s got zombies so I’m including it. And nope, this isn’t from Shaun of the Dead. This is from the show Spaced with Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, Nick Frost, and Jessica Stevenson–who were all a part of Shaun of the Dead years later. This episode is said to have been the inspiration to everyone’s favorite English zombie flick–and Shaun has several Spaced Easter eggs in it–and after watching just the episode’s opening I’m sure you’ll get why. Spaced is just a great show in general, but this is one of my favorite episodes of the whole show.
