A Distracted Blogger Birthday

Today’s my birthday, you guys!

I’ll be honest: I’m not much of a party person. The best present you can give me on my birthday is not expecting me to throw or attend any sort of awkward gathering of humans where I have to make small talk and plaster an awkward smile on my face as several acquaintances sing me happy birthday.

Actual picture of me at my last birthday party (also the gif that my bestie texted me this morning to celebrate the day–she gets me).

Birthdays as an adult can be weird, especially if you’re like me and you don’t drink or party a lot. The best way that you can make my birthday special is to make me feel loved and remembered. It isn’t that I don’t want the day to be special, it’s just that I prefer a more Ron Swanson-style birthday than anything else.

I’m all about keeping things low-key. I love having people tell me happy birthday, I love getting cards, and I love to celebrate with either me and the guy at home or just a few people to play games. And of course, by games, I definitely don’t mean horrible party games…

…I definitely mean tabletop or video games. Fun games that do not involve making me the center of attention. Basically, I like to keep my birthdays pretty chill. Even though I plan to keep the birthday festivities on the lighter side, I have been thinking quite a lot about this new year. Having a birthday in January means that the new year starts just a few weeks before my own birthday, so it’s a month of new beginnings.

I’ve talked a lot about my plans for 2016. I felt like I was treading water for most of 2015, and this year I want to chase dreams, get healthier (both mentally and physically), try new things, explore opportunities, and go on adventures. Already I have trips planned, clear goals to chase after, and a race to train for, and I’m chasing after all of it. Who knows what this year has for me, but I know it’s ultimately going to be a memorable year. It’s a new year and I’m officially a year older. Bring it on, 2016!

Now if you need me, I plan to celebrate my birthday with my husband, dog, some spicy Chinese food, and a Being Human UK marathon. It is my birthday, after all.

And, to celebrate here on the blog, her are a few of my favorite posts from here on the blog from the past year: It’s Totally a Real Job series, Everyday Cosplay (and my Geek & Sundry Everyday Cosplay), Supernatural Deaths I’m Still Not Over, Why It’s Awesome We Get Supergirl and Jessica JonesInterview with Allen & Craig from EIP (and my Geek & Sundry article about Vigilant), Guide to the Doctor Who Christmas specialsZombie Ninjas vs. Black Ops, and of course my articles and Geek & Sundry will never be something I’m not proud of.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday? Are you a party person, or do you also prefer the Ron Swanson route? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Happy Birthday!!!! I’m totally not a party person either. I usually go out to dinner at a burger joint and to a movie. There’s usually board games involved too! Low key can definitely be fun. Hope you have a great day!

  2. Happy Birthday! I’m definitely a low-key birthday person and then I went and married into my husband’s family who LOVE throwing b-day parties. Haha! Hope you’re having a great one! 💗

  3. Happy (one day late) Birthday Kendall! I hope your day is wonderful.

Also, you art totally in my brain. 😀 I have the same wants for 2016, and I feel the same way about birthday parties!

  4. Happy birthday!! I’m low key too. I don’t need a big party, I just need the people I love and care about to be there with me, eating some good food and maybe a few cupcakes 😉

  5. Happy Belated!!
My birthday has always been kinda overlooked, and being that I secretly love being the center of attention, I try crazy hard not to get hyped up year after year. Last year was the first year I didn’t make a big deal out of it (I was freelancing at a place where no one knew me) and my husband took me out to dinner. It was one of the better birthday’s I’ve had. This year I’m going to be spending it with my husband’s extended family to celebrate his grandfather’s 90th, so it’ll be another quiet year on the birthday front.
Adult birthdays are tough, but chinese food, a dude and a pup sounds perfect to me. I hope it was a good one!
