5 Fandom Friday: My Top 5 OTPs

5fandomfriday

I’m not a big shipper myself. Sure, I have fictional couples I like, but I’m not like the shippers I tend to see on the interwebz who are pining for non-canonical romances that will likely never be. I tend to be more of the variety of shipper that says, “If the show tells me to like them as a couple, I will”–which is why it utterly rocks my world when actors and writers come out YEARS after the movie/TV show is complete and speculates on how a couple that ended up happily ever would “probably be divorced” *shoots glare at Rupert Grint*.

So here are my top 5 OTPs. They aren’t earth-shattering, but they are the couples that I want to live happily ever after, together forever.

Jim and Pam, The Office

Jim and Pam

These two are absolutely adorable, and I love them as a couple so much. They’re adorable together, and they’re the type of fictional couple that I would love to be friends with. I definitely panicked a bit in the last season when they made us believe that Pam and Jim were going to get divorced or that Pam was going to cheat on Jim with a camera guy, but I’m so glad they kept them together. Pam + Jim 5evaaaa.

Oliver and Felicity, Arrow

Olicity

I mean, obviously these two. I started shipping them before Olicity became canon, but I think there wasn’t a doubt in anyone’s mind that they’d end up getting together. I’m still a bit worried that the show is going to break them up, but for now I’m a happy Olicity shipper. They balance each other out so well, and they’re incredibly supportive of one another in anything they attempt, be it being a vigilante or being the CEO of a multi-million dollar corporation.

Hyde and Jackie, That 70’s Show

Hyde and Jackie

Okay, these two aren’t canonical OTPs. For some reason, the That 70s Show writers broke them up, had Hyde marry (and quickly divorce) a stripper and paired Jackie with Fez. I’m still grumpy about that. Hyde and Jackie were so great for one another. Hyde challenged Jackie to think for herself and look beyond appearance and material things, and Jackie challenged Hyde to be softer and dream beyond winding up in jail at 21.  They were adorable together.

Zoe and Wash, Firefly and Serenity

Zoe and Wash

Oh, these two. I love them so very much. Zoe is one of my favorite characters on Firefly, and I just love her sweet relationship with her husband, Wash. They’re adorably in love, but they are also incredibly sarcastic with one another which is one of my favorite things ever. Of course, there’s that whole “I’m a leaf on the wind thing” that ruined LITERALLY EVERYTHING and the tragic 5 second animation that came out last year to rip our hearts out afresh…but let’s not think about that right now.

Hermoine and Ron, Harry Potter Series

Ron and Hermoine.gif

Ron and Hermoine ended up together with a lovely family and lived happily ever after. As they say, all was well. It’s canon, so that’s that. Leave it be, thankyouverymuch. Now, Rupert Grint and JK Rowling, I love you both, but I beg of you:

ship

Who are your top OTPs? Do you tend to ship more non-canonical couples, or stick with canon? 1. I pretty much do whatever I want in terms of shipping. Most of the time it’s canon. but sometimes I just go off the rails and ship whoever. LOL

  2. I pretty much only ship canon too. I blame it on my lack of creativity though:P I totally agree that Jackie and Hyde were perfect together!

    1. *high five* Yeah, I think it’s because, when I watch TV or a movie, I like to just immerse myself in the story. So if I’m trying to ship a non-canonical couple or re-write something, it pulls me out of the story.

    1. Absolutely. Definitely love Mila and Ashton together, but Jackie and Kelso were just too…I dunno, they ultimately just weren’t good for each other. Don’t get me started on Jackie and Fez… 😉

  3. Sometimes I ship canon, sometimes not.. it depends on the pairing in question, and how the show handles it (if canon).. I get really bored of shows kind of shoving a pairing down your throats… like how Bones became ALL about Bones/Booth and it bored me.

I have so much love for Oliver/Felicity though.

    1. Yes, for sure. I kind of felt that way with Scrubs with JD and Elliot. I remember seeing an interview with Bill Lawrence where he said Scrubs was NOT about JD and Elliot, so he didn’t have any sort of urgency with putting them together or not. Because of that, I really liked how their relationship evolved–even though I hardcore shipped them since day ONE, which makes me wonder how I could have forgotten them for this list. Anyway, I definitely feel ya. If the show isn’t romantic in nature, I like to see the relationships evolve naturally, not change the nature of the show to get two characters together.

  4. I’M SO BAD AT TV SHOWS. I have to admit that a lot of my fandom energy goes into books, and I seem to not be very good at multitasking when it comes to fangirl excitement. Personally…I don’t know, I think I do ship mostly non-canonical ships? Whoops! But I do ship both. There are lots of exceptions. YES TO RON AND HERMIONE. ❤

    1. Books are a TOTALLY legitimate source of fangirling! And I think I’m probably in the minority of shipping mostly canon, honestly. From what I see online, most of the pining is for non-canonical pairings. But my philosophy is ship what makes you happy! And RON AND HERMOINE FOREVER!!!

  5. Olicity are totally on my list too! They’re such a good pairing for me because they’re such contrasting personalities that balance each other out perfectly. She’s his ray of sunshine and he’s that little bit of dark making her shine brighter. Ugh, love them! ❤

  6. I definitely don’t always agree with canon; usually I’ll get an idea of who I want and then forever wish it happened if it doesn’t end up happening haha. Zoe & Wash – YES YES YES. Also completely agree about Hyde and Jackie. And your ending gif there is just perfection. 😀

    1. I totally get that. Sometimes I definitely do decide who I want to be together, but I usually just like to watch the story come together on its own–and then gripe about it later if need be. 🙂 And thanks. I thought that gif was pretty spot on, myself. 🙂

  7. I remember the stress of the last season of the Office – I would have been devastated if they’d ruined Jim and Pam, but I do think the tension between Pam and the cameraman was realistic. All relationships, even seemingly perfect ones, go through bumps, and I liked that the show reflected that AND kept the strong couple together – that seems to be a rare choice in TV writing.

I think Hyde and Jackie will be making my list as well – so many to choose from!

    1. Yep, I totally agree. I’m married myself, so I really appreciated that they showed them hit some real obstacles but work through them. And I’m glad I’m not the only one who loves Hyde and Jackie. I was SO SAD when they broke them up for good!

  8. I really need to rewatch The Office and That 70s Show. The later used to be my workout buddy because it would make me laugh and forget about the pain hahaha. Great pick with Hyde and Jackie. They are my favs!
