How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence impoverished, in squalor grow up to…have random geek girl bloggers obsessed and create outfits based on them?
Seriously though. Can we just talk about the musical Hamilton? I haven’t been this obsessed with a new Broadway musical that I likely won’t be able to actually see for years since my theatre teacher first played me the Wicked soundtrack in high school.
The fact that Lin-Manuel Miranda read a biography about Alexander Hamilton and was all, “Yeah, I’m going to make a hip-hop musical about this guy’s life. Totally.” I mean, listen to him explain it at the White House Poetry Jam. His conviction is so true, and after hearing him talk about it I felt like the moron for not immediately considering Alexander Hamilton a gangsta.
If you haven’t heard the soundtrack, do it now. It’s incredibly creative, and one of the most fun Broadway soundtracks I’ve heard in some time. While the show is sold out indefinitely, the cast still does little performances for the show’s lottery (#Ham4Ham). They’re digital over the winter (which means those of us outside of NYC can watch on their YouTube channel), but usually the shows are done right outside the theatre. For instance, the three King Georges #Ham4Ham as the Schuyler Sisters:
This show is kind of a phenomenon, and the show’s popularity has only grown since they featured Hamilton’s opening number (aptly titled “Alexander Hamilton”) on this year’s Grammy’s. Since it’s completely captivated me and most of the populace, I thought it only right to create some everyday cosplay outfits based on four of the characters from Alexander Hamilton: Alexander (obvs), Aaron Burr, and Eliza and Angelica Schuyler. Check it out:
I mean, of course I had to incorporate the American flag since he’s just like his country, he’s young, scrappy, and hungry.
Like I said, I haven’t seen this show yet, but listening to the soundtrack prompted me to learn more about Eliza. She was kind of an awesome woman. Seriously. Don’t just dress like
the fictitious Broadway version of her, read about her, too.
Eliza was absolutely amazing, but Angelica was also a fascinating woman, and crazy smart, too. I haven’t read up on Angelica as much as I’d like, but I do know that Renée Elise Goldsberry is an amazing actress and singer. Seriously, her songs are some of my favorite in the entire show.
I decided to go with a bit more of a boho look for Aaron Burr, and since he’s technically “the villain in my history” I gave him a black hat. And a gun necklace. Because I’m awful.
Have you gotten to see Hamilton live? Are you like me and obsessed with the soundtrack, eagerly awaiting the national tour announcement? What is your favorite song in the musical? Let me know in the comments!
